Modern Coup Studio – Field Bag In Progress

My husband, who is an avid photographer, asked me to design him a small bag that he can use to put his camera, iPad and personal belongings in. So, I designed this field bag for him and finished it last week. I really liked the way it turned out. I used a midnight blue lightly waxed canvas, my favourite material because it’s beautiful, strong and water repellent. I haven’t introduced this colour in any of the bags in the shop so far. It’s a lovely deep rich blue and is more masculine. I also used a thick vegetable tanned bridle leather for the strap, which has a buckle to adjust the length. All the hardware is solid brass.

My husband put it to the test this past weekend. Overall, he really liked the bag. He liked the way it looked, how the interior has a pocket and there are 2 expandable outside pockets (they’re underneath the flap). It was pretty good for his needs, but when he tried to put a few more things in, it was a bit too small (the bag is 10.5″ wide x 7″ tall x 3″ deep). It just needs to be a little big bigger, so back to drafting a new pattern!

I will be selling this bag in the shop once I finalize the size and make some adjustments. My intention for this bag is for it to be unisex, but leaning more towards men. The reason is because I feel there is little choice out there for a small/medium size bag for men to put their belongings in, while still looking masculine. I’m thinking it would also look good in a charcoal grey…

Hi Cat,

This bag is nice. You are totally spot on! You are correct. There is little choice out there for a small/medium size bag for men to put their belongings in, while still looking masculine.

I have looking for a masculine waxed canvas tote for a very long time. One that is not too big (especially that I am of modest height) and around the dimensions of 13″ H x 12″ W (across) x 3.5″ D. Filson totes are nice but are too large and quite pricey. What can you suggest? Thanks!

Hi Eric,

I’m so happy you like the bag. I will be making a few men’s bags and pouches in the next little while. There is still a lot to do, but I’m hoping to get at least the field bag done in the next month.

The Filson bags are nice and will last a long time. The thing I don’t like about them, though, is that they are heavy. Bags that weigh a few pounds before you put anything in them are not functional, in my opinion.

I do have a couple of well-made small/medium waxed bags that I can suggest. However, I’m not sure about the size that you want. 12″ wide is what I will be changing my field bag to. However, 13″ long is quite long. Is that what you’re looking for? If it’s 13″ long, it’s quite a large bag.
